about

Matt Hull (of Really From/People Like You/Glovepilot, who has also recorded with I Kill Giants, Gulfer, and The World Is A Beautiful Place) recorded this whole album on an iPhone. For fans of experimental, improvisation, and fascinating soundscapes.

A little about the album from Matt Hull:
This collection of recordings contains both new compositions and older field recordings dating as far back as November of 2014. Some of these tracks weren't recorded with the intention of being "released", but with time and change of perspective, they have since taken on new meaning. While digging through old Voice Memo recordings and curating the tracks for this album, a lot of the decision-making weighed on certain qualities of the recording like performance, content, timing, instrumentation and location. Below I have included some thoughts on this process.

LOCATION
I often find myself exploring the theme of "location" and its role in the performance of the music. I feel that the time & location affect the quality of the recording (acoustics, background sounds) and the emotional content of the performance. Most of this music was recorded inside familiar spaces like current/previous apartments and work, but also some locations not so familiar. The track "Bugz" was recorded in Vieques, PR one night during a week-long stay for my brother's wedding. In this recording you can hear the wave of sound coming from coquí frogs, which I had mistaken for bugs at the time, thus the track title.

TIMING/INSTRUMENTATION
A great amount of thought was put into the flow of this album, meticulously ordering and re-ordering tracks. I worked to create effective transitions between tracks and also contrast between "Side A" and "Side B". I compose regularly and have always been interested in experimenting with other forms of musical expression not limited to trumpet playing, so you will find recordings of other instruments on this album as well as a track of "synthesized" sound. Also, more recently under the influence of early electroacoustic composers and tape manipulation, I wanted to create the illusion of tape splicing (see tracks 8 & 9).

PERFORMANCE/RECORDING
Whether or not music is "performance ready" and deemed fit for recording is subjective and usually left up to the performer. The majority of my "Voice Memo" catalog started as sketches of ideas and that were meant to be revisited later. My intention with including such recordings is to highlight and comment on the creative process. I often find that the process of creating is what I enjoy most. Recordings and performances are a product of the countless hours of work that one puts into writing and rehearsing. I also want to question the role of the "sound recording". I have often felt more satisfied with a scratch recording or video clip than I have with a studio recording. To highlight the contrast between these styles, I intend for this album to have a balance of well-executed "studio-recorded" quality tracks, rehearsal-quality sketches, and field recordings.
